I didn't start reading her books until after Bones the TV show. I didn't expect to like them as the character had so many changes. I loved them, Iwas hooked from Book 1. This is the first book that I haven't been crazy about. The plot was a little thin and there were not any really exciting scenes in the book. The book was more about her love life being in the toilet than about a serious mystery.

Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan needs a diversion as her love life seems to be collapsing with her relationship with Detective Andrew Ryan, shaky at its optimistic best. Thus, when she is asked to look at the remains of a cold case in New Brunswick, Canada, she leaps at the opportunity. The skeleton is that of a teenage girl, which leads Tempe to believe that the bones are the remains of Evangeline Landry. Three decades ago when Tempe was eight, her fifteen year old friend Evangeline vanished without a trace. Looking back Tempe vaguely remembers being told to forget Evangeline ever lived.

As she recalls the warning from her youth, Tempe wonders what caused the lesions on the bone structure. At the same time Ryan investigates three cold cases involving missing teenage girls eventually found dead with the same scenario as that of the Jane Doe that Tempe feels is Evangeline. Both think their cases are the result of the same serial killer and share the fear factor that this predator still operates freely after all these years.

Tempe's tenth forensic whodunit is a superb investigative thriller that hooks the audience from the first moment that the heroine begins her inquiry. The fast-paced story line is action-packed with the two subplots tied together as much by the investigations as it is the relationship. No one plays with Bones better than Kathy Reichs does as the latest Temperance Brennan cold case mysteries retains the series trademark of fresh suspense enhanced by the latest forensic breakthroughs.

I was hooked on the TV show ever since the FBI guy said to Brennan, " you be Skully to my Mulder ". So when I started reading this book I was of course shocked to find that the universe of the books is nothing like the TV universe. I won't explain all the differences here, they are well known to the readers. This story is not very interesting. The writing starts out really good, and then deteriorates. By the end I just wanted it to be over.

I have gone through the entire Tempe Brennan series this summer by Kathy Reichs, and have enjoyed everything I've read by her. Unfortunately, her latest novel, Bones to Ashes, is not quite as strong as her previous books. Overall, I'd rate it 3 and a half stars.

Dr. Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, is working several cases at once. Detective Andrew Ryan (sometime love interest) fears that a serial killer might be murdering teenaged girls. Ryan has a dead body, several recent unidentified dead girls, as well as several missing persons. Another colleague who specializes in cold cases, Hippolyte Gallant, asks Brennan to check out a set of bones found in New Brunswick. Brennan had a childhood friend from New Brunswick who would summer at Pawley's Island, SC where Brennan and her family also vacationed. But her friend, Evangeline Landry, disappeared suddenly one summer without a trace. Brennan has a gut feeling that the bones might belong to Evangeline. In Bones to Ashes, Brennan finds herself investigating leper colonies in Canada as well as makers of kiddie porn.

There are a number of things that bothered me about Bones to Ashes. First, Brennan's sister, Harry, is totally obnoxious and will interfere with Brennan's cases without concern for safety or protocol. She's way too over the top. The love triangle (Tempe-Ryan-Pete) kind of fizzles in this book. And the plot is just a little too far-fetched. Why Brennan would think unknown bones from New Brunswick would be Evangeline's is just way too much of a stretch. Also, why doesn't Reichs provide us with a map of the Canadian Maritimes so that we know where some of the action is taking place?

But despite these criticisms, I still enjoyed Bones to Ashes and Reichs really knows her forensic anthropology (as well she should). You can just picture yourself in a lab with Brennan. Reichs describes how she boils the soft tissue off bones in "submersion baskets, the kind used to deep-fry potatoes or fish...Heat the water to just below boiling, add enzyme detergent to minimize grease, stir. The recipe's a hit every time. Unless the bones are too fragile, of course. Then it's hand laundry all the way."

When an author has a series, it's almost impossible for every book to be top notch. With Bones to Ashes, Reichs provides us with a mystery that is still better than average.

I HAVE READ THIS SERIES FROM BOOK ONE AND OTHER THAN THE BOOK BEFORE THIS,"BREAK NO BONES", I HAVE THEM ALL ON AUDIO. THIS BOOK WAS LIKE YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SCORE CARD TO KNOW WHO IS WHO OR WHO THEY THINK IS WHO? I COULD NEVER GET ONTO THE TV SERIES BECAUSE OF NO RYAN AND A STILL LIVING BROTHER???????? ALTHOUGHT THE RELATIONSHIP BETYWEEN TEMPE AND RYAN HAS NEVER BEEN THE FOCUS OF THIS SERIES OF BOOKS, IT HAS ALWAYS PLAYED A BIG PART. WHAT A STRETCH FOR US TO BELIEVE, FOR LILY, RYAN IS GOING TO TRY AND MAKE A ONE NIGHT STAND THAT HAPPENED 19 YEARS AGO WORK........????????? PLEASE, BE THERE FOR YOUR DAUGHTER AND BRING THE MOTHER INTO THE STORY LINE, BUT TO GO BACK TO "THE WAY WE WERE" OR MAYBE "YOU DO GET A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE IT RIGHT"..... THE WORK TEMPE DOES IS SO INTERESTING AND SUCH A WONDER. ALL THE LIVES SHE TOUCHES, THROUGH THE DEAD, AND HELPS BRINGS A CLOSURE TO. ASHES TO BONES WAS A BIT CONFUSING, UNTIL THE BOOKS END, OF WHO WAS WHO. MAYBE A FEW TOO MANY LOST AND MISSING FOR TOO LONG OF A PERIOD OF TIME, OR THE CHILDHOOD FRIEND IN THE MIX. MAYBE, JUST UPSET AT THE BIG PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP THING. HOPEFULLY, THE NEXT BOOK, WILL BE BETTER AND SOMEWHERE OUT THERE, THERE IS A STORY LINE THAT TEMPE CAN SINK HER TEETH INTO.
